Books like Half Life by Shelley Jackson

In "Half Life," Shelley Jackson presents a compelling portrait of conjoined twins Nora and Blanche, whose uneasy coexistence in San Francisco gives way to a desperate journey to London in search of the Unity Foundation—a secret organization that claims it can merge twin bodies into a single being. Nora, the bold, independent twin, wants to be free of her sister’s weight after Blanche has slept for years, while Blanche’s stillness amplifies the psychological divide between them. As Nora moves to London, memories of the twins’ unusual birth in Too Bad, Nevada—a ghost town haunted by lizards and a daily “Shootout at Noon”—resurface, blurring the line between past and present. The narrative weaves grotesque humor with profound introspection, exploring themes of identity, dependence, and the human yearning for wholeness. Jackson’s prose, rich in metaphor and visual detail, delivers an imaginative, touching, and unsettling exploration of what it means to share and to be separate.
