Books like The Minotaur by Ruth Rendell

Kerstin Kvist, a freshly graduated nurse, is hired to care for John Cosway at the ivy‑clad Lydstep Old Hall, a family estate steeped in tradition and whispered madness. As she settles into the quiet routines of the aged home, Kerstin encounters the complex dynamics among Julia Cosway and her four daughters, whose bitter disputes simmer beneath a veneer of provincial decorum. John’s strange behavior, attributed to a lineage of mental instability, and the house’s sealed rooms harbor unseen histories. Through her observations and journal entries, Kerstin uncovers a web of secrets that threaten to unleash sexual obsession, betrayal, and ultimately, violence upon the once serene estate. The novel blends psychological tension with domestic intrigue, highlighting themes of inheritance, family loyalty, and the shadows that linger in the halls of old country homes.
