Books like Sixth Column by Robert A. Heinlein

In a world where America has largely disarmed itself, an Asian totalitarian government overthrows the nation overnight through superior technology. The final American bastion is a secret laboratory that achieves a breakthrough technological experiment, though the project kills most staff and leaves only a handful of survivors, including one scientist. A reserve intelligence Major, normally an advertising executive, arrives to find the laboratory in ruins and the nation under occupation. Tasked as the last active military officer, he must mobilize the surviving scientists and harness the new technology—seemingly magical to him—to lead a clandestine resistance against the brutal regime. The story examines the morality of wielding great power, the costs of fighting a regime that shows no respect for life, and the imperative of restoring freedom to the people.
