Books like Some places more than others by Renée Watson

Amara, a teenager from Oregon, is determined to celebrate her birthday in New York, hoping to meet her father's relatives and explore the city where his family grew up. Her parents, however, are hesitant to let her go, and she soon learns that her father has not spoken to his own father, Grandpa Earl, for twelve years—since the day Amara was born. This revelation makes the trip even more urgent, as Amara believes she may be able to break the cycle of silence and help her father reconcile with his father. Upon arriving in Harlem, Amara is struck by the stark contrast between the urban landscape and her quiet hometown. Immersed in the neighborhood’s rich history and energetic culture, she uncovers surprising truths about her loved ones and her own sense of self. The journey becomes a path to understanding family dynamics, confronting hidden grievances, and embracing her heritage.
