Books like Ash Wednesday by Ralph M. McInerny

Father Brendan Dowling has long served as both parson and resident detective at St. Hilary’s. In "Ash Wednesday," he faces a chilling case when a stranger among the Fox River community is revealed to be a notorious murderer. The mystery deepens when the murderer's wife, previously battling cancer and a brief remission, is found on life support after a short change in her condition the following day. As the town rallies against him, Dowling wrestles with questions of guilt, suffering, and the limits of justice. He discovers that the crime might be more complex than it appears, prompting him to reopen the investigation and seek the truth beyond the courtroom verdict. His inquiry into the ethical implications of euthanasia and the role of clergy in guarding moral truth forms the core of this thought‑provoking detective story, blending crime‑solving with profound religious reflection.
