Books like The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce

After retiring, Harold Fry finds his routine deflated by the demands of mowing the lawn and the silence of his household. A sudden letter from a former colleague, Queenie Hennessy—ill with cancer and awaiting hospice care in the far north of England—spurs him to walk 250 miles from Kingsbridge to Berwick‑upon‑Twed. As he traverses villages and countryside, he meets a diverse array of people, each sharing stories that echo his own life. The pilgrimage becomes a deeply personal quest, prompting him to reflect on his relationships with his wife Maureen, his son David, and his estranged friend. Through the physical journey, Harold confronts his own sense of purpose, redemption, and self‑acceptance, questioning whether he is truly saving another or saving himself. The novel combines humor and heartfelt reflection, offering an exploration of middle‑age life, family ties, and the transformative power of long walks through England’s landscape.
