Books like Other Minds by Peter Godfrey-Smith

Peter Godfrey‑Smith, a philosopher of science and avid scuba diver, examines the surprising cognitive world of cephalopods. Drawing on recent biological research and his own underwater observations, he argues that the evolutionary paths that produced sophisticated brains in mammals and in octopuses, squids, and cuttlefish converged on similar problems of awareness, yet arrived at uniquely different solutions. The book traces the origins of communication—from primitive signaling in early marine organisms to the complex color‑changing displays of present‑day octopuses—and links these developments to the emergence of nervous systems capable of supporting advanced behavior. By comparing the octopus’s remarkable brain to that of humans, Godfrey‑Smith illuminates the deep roots of consciousness and invites readers to reconsider the boundaries of intelligence in the animal kingdom.
