Books like The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein by Peter Ackroyd

Peter Ackroyd revisits Mary Shelley’s classic through a fresh lens, following the unlikely friendship between the ambitious scientist Victor Frankenstein and the contemplative poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Set against the backdrop of 19th‑century London’s London, the narrative explores themes of atheism, scientific ambition, and the moral limits of creation. As Victor experiments with anatomical dissection and resurrects life using imperfect corpses, he moves his clandestine laboratory to a deserted factory in Limehouse. Here, he encounters radical resurrectionists, their methods heightening the danger and dread. Ackroyd’s prose captures the era’s literary currents, alluding to contemporaries such as Lord Byron, William Godwin, and Mary Shelley herself, while foregrounding the psychological struggles of a scientist grappling with the consequences of his forbidden experiment.
