Books like Skippy Dies by Paul Murray

Seabrook College for Boys, a venerable Dublin institution, offers nothing for the unlikely pair: Ruprecht Van Doren, an overweight mathematics prodigy obsessed with the Search for Extra‑Terrestrial Intelligence, and Daniel "Skippy" Juster, his awkward but loyal roommate. Their day‑to‑day existence is unnoticed by professors and classmates alike—until Skippy develops a crush on Lori, a Frisbee‑playing Siren from the neighboring girls’ school. Suddenly, interest blooms from the campus, including Carl, a part‑time drug dealer and self‑declared psychopath who has been quietly observing the boys. While the faculty argue over modernisation and Ruprecht tries to open a portal to a parallel universe, Skippy, driven by affection and desperation, prepares for a showdown in the form of a deadly doughnut‑eating race. The contest forces everyone at Seabrook to confront the fragile boundaries between past and present, love and betrayal, life and death. In the process, long‑held secrets rise to the surface, challenging students and teachers alike to reassess the thin lines that separate their world from the unknown.
