Books like Let it come down by Paul Bowles

In “Let It Come Down,” Paul Bowles presents a tense, atmospheric narrative centered on Nelson Dyar, a former New York bank worker who relocates to Tangier for a position at a travel agency. His quiet expectation turns into disquiet when he discovers the agency is a front for an illicit currency‑exchange operation. The novel unfolds against the backdrop of mid‑twentieth‑century Tangier, capturing the city’s enigmatic allure and the undercurrents of its criminal underbelly. Bowles’ own observations in the Preface remark that the setting and its characters are intimately tied to a specific moment in time, rendering the story a vivid snapshot of a once‑different era. A climactic final section, written in Xauen in the Rif Mountains while under the influence of kif, closes the tale with an intensified sense of exotic isolation and moral ambiguity.
