Books like The ginger tree by Oswald Wynd

In 1903, a 20‑year‑old Scottish woman leaves her homeland to travel to China, where she is to marry a British attaché. Her arrival in the colonial setting promises a conventional marriage, yet she quickly finds herself drawn into an intimate relationship with a young Japanese count, shocking the expatriate British society around her. The novel follows her internal conflict and the social ramifications of her choice, exploring themes of identity, loyalty, and cultural tension through her daring liaison. The story is set against the backdrop of early 20th‑century Sino‑British interactions and presents a nuanced look at the challenges faced by women navigating cross‑cultural expectations while confronting personal desire. Under the author's guidance, the narrative combines historical detail with a personal drama that reveals the complexities of fidelity and the consequences of stepping outside societal norms.
