Books like Knots by Nuruddin Farah

Nuruddin Farah’s latest novel, *Knots*, returns to his Somali roots with a narrative centered on a self‑reliant woman named Cambara. Born in Somalia and raised in North America, she returns to Mogadishu to escape a failed marriage and to reclaim her family's home from a warlord who has taken it. The book follows Cambara’s struggle in a city where women are expected to wear veils and where the political landscape is dominated by drug‑addled, power‑hungry warlords. Along the way, she finds support among Somali women activists working to broker peace. Farah’s account offers a penetrating portrayal of Mogadishu’s chaotic streets, reflecting his own recent efforts to negotiate the reclamation of his family’s property and his involvement in peace negotiations. *Knots* presents an intimate and realistic portrait of Somalia’s capital, paralleling the city’s media image with the lived reality of those affected by violence and political instability. Farah’s exploration of African feminism and his nuanced world view provide readers with a valuable perspective on the contemporary Muslim world.
