Books like Ross Macdonald by Nolan, Tom.

In this first full-length biography, Tom Nolan explores the life of Ross Macdonald, the pseudonym of mystery writer Kenneth Millar. Drawing on the Kenneth and Margaret Millar Archives, over forty years of correspondence, and hundreds of interviews, Nolan uncovers the complexities of Millar’s personal and professional life. From his early days in Santa Barbara to his development as a celebrated crime‑fiction author, the work illuminates both his private struggles—his marriage to fellow writer Margaret Millar and the legal and emotional challenges faced by their daughter Linda—and his public achievements, tracing the trajectory from his debut in "Manhunt" to the respect he earned among peers. The biography offers a sympathetic portrayal of Millar’s relationships, offering insight into the forces that shaped his psychologically rich detective novels, and presents a fuller picture of a writer who has long been revered in American crime literature.
