Books like Syntactic structures by Noam Chomsky

Published in 1965, Noam Chomsky’s Syntactic Structures introduced the idea that a finite set of formal rules can generate an infinite array of sentences, placing syntax at the core of linguistic theory. By treating a fragment of English grammar with formal, non‑empirical methods, the book established a new discipline of generative grammar, spurred interdisciplinary dialogue among linguists, philosophers of language, and psychologists, and strengthened the ties between linguistics and emerging computational fields.

The syntax of words by 3778723|Elisabeth O. Selkirk book cover

πŸ“˜ The syntax of words

This monograph examines complex words -- compounds and those involving derivational and inflectional affixation -- from a syntactic standpoint that encompasses both the structure of words and the system of rules for generating that structure. The author contends that the syntax of words and the more familiar syntax involving relations among words must be defined by two discrete sets of principles in the grammar, but nevertheless that word structure has the same general formal properties as the larger syntactic structure and is generated by the same sort of rule system. This investigation of word structure and rule systems is based for the most part on the word syntax of English and related languages. One of its major conclusions is that English word structure can be "properly characterized solely in terms of a context-free grammar." Selkirk points out that the Semitic languages, for example, must be characterized in terms of a more elaborate schema. -- Back cover.

Aspects of the Theory of Syntax by 7476011|Noam Chomsky book cover

πŸ“˜ Aspects of the Theory of Syntax

Noam Chomsky's 'Aspects of the theory of syntax', published in 1965, was a landmark work in generative grammar that introduced certain technical innovations still drawn upon in contemporary work. The fiftieth anniversary edition of this influential book includes a new preface by the author that identifies proposals that seem to be of lasting significance, reviews changes and improvements in the formulation and implementation of basic ideas, and addresses some of the controversies that arose over the general framework. Beginning in the mid-fifties and emanating largely from MIT, linguists developed an approach to linguistic theory and to the study of the structure of particular languages that diverged in many respects from conventional modern linguistics. Although the new approach was connected to the traditional study of languages, it differed enough in its specific conclusions about the structure of language to warrant a name, 'generative grammar'. Various deficiencies were discovered in the first attempts to formulate a theory of transformational generative grammar and in the descriptive analysis of particular languages that motivated these formulations. At the same time, it became apparent that these formulations can be extended and deepened. In this book, Chomsky reviews these developments and proposes a reformulation of the theory of transformational generative grammar that takes them into account. The emphasis in this study is syntax; semantic and phonological aspects of the language structure are discussed only insofar as they bear on syntactic theory.--
