Books like Mr Clarinet by Nick Stone

Max Mingus, once praised as Miami’s top detective, is drawn back into the shadows of the city he left when he accepts a massive bounty to find the missing five‑year‑old son of Haitian billionaire Allain Carver. Three years into the case, no leads have emerged; the powerful Carver family’s resources have yielded nothing, and other private investigators sent to Haiti have fallen victim to their own demons. Mingus’s decision to return to Haiti is fueled by desperation and the promise of a fortune. He must navigate a landscape steeped in corruption, manipulation, and a pervasive belief in Voodoo spirits, including the legendary figure known as Mr. Clarinet, who allegedly lures children away. The investigation threatens not only his life but also the fragile balance of his own broken past, raising questions about whether the truth will be more shocking than the myth itself. The story blends suspense, mystery, and psychological depth as Mingus confronts the haunted quiet of his own empty home, the darkness of Haiti’s hidden layers, and his looming chance to regain something of the man he once was.
