Books like Grace by Natashia Deón

In the 1840s South, fifteen‑year‑old Naomi leaves the brutal Alabama plantation where she was born, taking her family with her on a perilous journey toward freedom. After escaping, she finds shelter in a Georgia brothel run by a fierce Jewish madam named Cynthia. Amid gamblers, prostitutes, and drunks, Naomi begins a complex romance with a smooth‑talking white patron named Jeremy. Their union brings forth a daughter, Josey, whose blond hair and white skin set her apart from other children raised by enslaved families. Ever since her own mother's death, Josey has been raised by a free black man named Charles. As the Emancipation Proclamation spreads, the once‑hopeful day of liberation turns into violence—an event that will shape Josey and her family's future.
