Books like The ally by Nancy N. Rue
Set in 1860 on a South Carolina plantation, the story follows eleven‑year‑old Austin as he chooses to defy the legal prohibitions of his time by teaching reading to a slave he has befriended. His courageous act endangers the slave’s life but also compels Austin’s uncle to reconsider the harsh realities of slavery on their farm. Through this intimate perspective, the narrative explores the moral complexities of literacy, faith, and family in a society defined by oppression.
"The Ally" portrays the power of education and friendship to challenge entrenched systems of inequality, showing how a single act of compassion can inspire change even within the most rigid social hierarchies.
