Books like The pickup by Nadine Gordimer

When Julie Summers’ vehicle stalls on a shady street in South Africa, an unexpected helper emerges from the wrecked chassis—a young Arab man heading to the desert to evade deportation. Their chance encounter sets off a chain of emotions that upends their perceptions of one another. The novel explores themes of immigration, privilege, and the social fabric of a new South Africa interwoven with an Arab village in the desert. It examines how love can endure only when freed from outside certainties, revealing the rites of passage inherent in emigration and immigration. Through the intersecting lives of a privileged businesswoman’s daughter and a desperate immigrant, the story asks what solutions life demands when extraordinary circumstances arise, challenging the characters’ assumptions about identity, belonging, and the human heart.
