Books like The Unknown Craftsman by Muneyoshi Yanagi

Sōetsu Yanagi’s essays invite readers to reconsider the worth of ordinary, hand‑crafted objects made by anonymous artisans within traditional Japanese practice. He argues that artistry emerges from the "world of birth" rather than deliberate creation, weaving together folk art, philosophy, and religion. The volume, the first to translate Yanagi’s major writings into a Western language, is enriched by seventy‑six plates that illustrate the universal concepts he espouses. Yanagi—a Tokyo native and graduate of Tokyo Imperial University—played a pivotal role in establishing folkcraft museums in Seoul and Tokyo. His collaborations with figures such as potters Kanjirō Kawai, Shōji Hamada, and Bernard Leach helped elevate anonymous craftspeople to critical attention. His writings, drawing on his travels across the Orient, Europe, and America as well as his studies in psychology, offer a profound meditation on aesthetics and the creative process. Today, as craft and handmade objects regain prominence, Yanagi’s call for artistic freedom within tradition remains strikingly relevant. This book provides scholars and enthusiasts with a foundational perspective on Japanese folk art and its broader cultural implications.
