Books like Maria; or, The Wrongs of Woman by Mary Wollstonecraft

*Maria; or, The Wrongs of Woman* is the unfinished sequel to Wollstonecraft’s groundbreaking *A Vindication of the Rights of Woman*. Released posthumously in 1798 by her husband William Godwin, the novel criticises the patriarchal marriage system and the legal structures that supported it. Through the story of a woman locked in an asylum by her husband, Wollstonecraft explores how societal injustices are perpetuated by women’s own romantic fantasy and sentimentalism. The work foregrounds female sexuality and cross‑class solidarity, making it a radical feminist text of its time. In the twentieth century, feminist scholars revisited the novel, recognising it as an extension of Wollstonecraft’s arguments and as a pioneering feminist fiction.
