Superintendent Richard Jury, known for his meticulous nature, sits at the centre of a perplexing mystery when a series of fatal accidents disturb both the wildlife and the residents of Ashdown Dean. Joined by his sophisticated assistant, Melrose Plant, and aided by the assistance of a young animal lover, Jury must unravel the clues that hint at a deliberate act. The investigation, set against the backdrop of English country life, blends the intricacies of police procedure with the atmospheric charm of the village, offering readers both suspense and character depth. Jury’s reputation as a thoughtful and unassuming leader is tested as the case unfolds, revealing hidden motives and a subtle web of relationships among the villagers. Close collaboration with Melrose Plant, whose aristocratic background provides a contrasting perspective, enriches the narrative, while the involvement of a teenage animal enthusiast adds a youthful lens to the unfolding drama. Through a carefully paced examination of evidence, the novel showcases how even small communities can hide complex secrets, and how the pursuit of truth sometimes requires looking beyond the obvious.
