Books like Roughing It by Mark Twain

Mark Twain, born Samuel Clemens, left Missouri in 1861 to work with his brother in Nevada’s newly appointed territorial administration. He was drawn to the Humboldt mines by gold fever, but eventually found his calling as a reporter in Virginia City. In 1864 he moved to San Francisco, where his reputation as a humorist blossomed. Roughing It, first published in 1872 and released as a book in 1891, records Twain’s adventures across the Far West. The narrative spans twenty chapters about his overland trek by boat and stagecoach to Carson City, visits to Mormon settlements, experiences in mining camps, and political and criminal scenes in both Virginia City and San Francisco. It also recounts a trip to the Hawaiian Islands and concludes with his return to San Francisco and rise to the lecture circuit.
