Books like The Apostate's Tale by Margaret Frazer

As Lent comes to a close, the nuns of St. Frideswide's priory expect a peaceful celebration. Their plans are disrupted by the unexpected return of Sister Cecely, a former nun who fled nine years earlier with a lover. Now, after her lover’s death, she returns carrying her illegitimate son, claiming penance and the desire to seek sanctuary for his sake. Although the sisters cannot turn the mother and child away, their arrival awakens lingering questions and spirals into doubt over the commitment of the other nuns to their cloistered way of life. Sister Cecely’s motives remain uncertain; the vows of silence and truth are challenged as her lies grow, and the fragile stability of the priory is threatened by potential danger and even the threat of murder.
