Books like Cary Grant by Marc Eliot

Cary Grant, born Archibald Leach on January 18, 1904, in Bristol, England, became Hollywood’s quintessential leading man. The biography traces his ascent from silent‑screen roots to thirty‑plus years of iconic roles, including classic comedies like "Bringing Up Baby" and dramatic performances in Hitchcock’s "Suspicion" and "Notorious". It examines his collaborations with celebrated directors such as Howard Hawks, George Cukor, Leo McCarey, and Stanley Donen, and his on‑screen chemistry with stars Mae West, Katharine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly, and Sophia Loren. Behind the polished public image Grant struggled with fame, an ambiguous sexuality, and a private life marked by multiple marriages and affairs, including a long relationship with Randolph Scott. Despite a lifetime of box office success, he received no competitive Oscar until a special lifetime achievement award in 1970. This biography offers a comprehensive, nuanced view of Grant’s personal and professional legacy.
