Books like Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell

Set in 1580s England during the Black Plague, ‘Hamnet’ follows a young Latin tutor who falls in love with Agnes, a fiercely independent healer whose gifts for plants and potions rival her mythical stature. Their marriage, centered on Henley Street in Stratford‑upon‑Avon, becomes a testament to devotion as Agnes protects and nurtures her family while her husband’s career on the London stage ascends. When their young son Hamnet dies suddenly from fever, the family is devastated, and the loss echoes throughout the story. The novel weaves historical detail with intimate portraiture, exploring grief, memory, and the profound influence of a little boy whose name would later be associated with one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays. Maggie O’Farrell delivers an evocative, lyrical narrative that honors both personal tragedy and historical context.
