Books like Mackenzie's Mountain by Linda Howard

A quiet Wyoming town is set to learn new lessons when Mary Elizabeth Potter arrives as its newest schoolteacher. Self‑appointed spinster and sharp‑witted educator, Mary is determined to bring Wolf Mackenzie’s son back into school. After a tense confrontation with the boy’s father, she realizes how powerful the relationships between father and son, and her own convictions can be. Wolf Mackenzie, a man with a chip on his shoulder and an unjust reputation in Ruth, sees hope in Mary’s steadiness and compassion. Together, they begin to break the town’s stereotypes, showing that bravery and integrity can overcome prejudice and that even the toughest lessons can have gentle teachers. Set in contemporary America, the story follows the evolving friendship and growing affection between Mary and Wolf as they confront past injustices and the expectations of a small community.
