Books like Such is death by Leo Bruce

Leo Bruce launches this detective tale with a chilling diary entry from a mastermind who has painstakingly devised the perfect murder—one that evades police, detectives, and all conventional investigative methods. Set against a bleak, blustery night on the promenade at Selby‑on‑Sea, the victim appears as the only missing piece in the killer’s chilling puzzle. Yet the plot twists when the unsuspected presence of Carolus Deene, an exceptional schoolmaster turned detective, upends the murderer’s strategy. Deene’s sharp mind and scholarly approach to crime force the criminal to confront an intelligence that no routine investigation could have predicted. Bruce blends elements of classic mystery with an English coastal atmosphere, creating a narrative that pits calculated planning against unpredictable intellect. This novel explores themes of cerebral triumph, the limits of manipulation, and the unexpected power of education and curiosity in solving a crime that seems unsolvable. The setting of Selby‑on‑Sea provides a distinct English mood while the protagonist’s background as a history teacher adds depth to his analytical skills.
