Books like The basic eight by Lemony Snicket
Flannery Culp gives a candid account of her last year at a suburban high school in San Francisco. She and the seven friends of the Basic Eight navigate tyrannical teachers, perverted classmates, tragic crushes, relentless gossip, cruel jokes, and the hallucinating effects of absinthe.
When tabloid television accuses Flannery of murder—a claim she denies—she explains that while high school can be intensely stressful, she has never killed anyone. Instead, she wants readers to understand that she is not a murderer, only a very dramatic storyteller.
The story is humorous, ironical, and shaped by the dynamics of teenage life, reminding readers that the drama of high school can feel both absurd and tragic at once.
