Books like Tanner On Ice by Lawrence Block

Evan Tanner, a superspy whose career spanned the Cold War era, lost the ability to sleep during a Korean battlefield. In the 1970s, he was frozen in a basement in Union City, New Jersey, in a cryogenic stasis that would last for more than a quarter century. When advances in technology thaw him, Tanner emerges into a vastly altered world—one where many familiar threats remain, though their political contours have shifted. Immediately after reactivation, Tanner is thrust into an undercover assignment in Southeast Asia. Posing as a monk, he infiltrates a regime that no longer resembles the countries he once knew, destabilizing its power structure while evading lethal double‑crossing conspiracies. His mission includes rescuing a beautiful prisoner, and a host of corrupt officials, political intrigue, and gremlins of power the spy must confront. With the support of his former super‑secret boss, “the Chief,” who is eager to see his favorite operative back in action, Tanner grapples with a future that seems both familiar and frighteningly new. Conspiracy, corruption, and political chicanery persist, and beneath it all, seductive intrigue complicates the stakes, as Tanner seeks to right past wrongs and reclaim lost time.
