Books like Lest Darkness Fall by L. Sprague De Camp

A modern archaeologist, Martin Padway, is catapulted back in time to Rome during the 6th century AD, a period when the Western Roman Empire has collapsed and the Goths have taken control. As he tries to navigate the complex political landscape, religious controversies, and diplomatic challenges of the era, Martin realizes that his knowledge of the future could help alter history and prevent the fall into darkness. Martin adopts the identity of Mysterious Martinus and must convince powerful leaders and contend with the very real dangers of being an outsider in a time of upheaval. His efforts, influenced by his scientific understanding and a firm hope that history can be redirected, place him directly in the throes of historical decision making. Through his attempts to intervene, readers are offered a speculative look at alternate history, time travel, and the fragility of civilization during an era when Rome was a pawn of political power and religious debate.
