Books like The Beginning by Katherine Applegate
The opening book of the Animorphs series follows teenagers Jake, Rachel, Tobias, Cassie, and Marco and their alien ally Ax as they learn of a covert invasion by parasitic aliens known as the Yeerks. Lacking public support, the teens are left to secretly resist the Yeerks while keeping their true identities hidden. As the conflict escalates, they face a pivotal choice between staying concealed or confronting the alien threat.
From the moment they first glimpse the Yeerks, their ordinary lives are turned into a subterranean battle that threatens to expose the hidden war to the world. The story captures the tension between secrecy and action, and sets the stage for the series’ long arc of resistance and transformation.
Central themes include friendship, loyalty, and the moral complexities of war, while the insect-based Yeerk antagonists provide a chilling counterpoint to the young protagonists’ determination.
