Books like The devil in music by Kate Ross
Julian Kestrel, a Regency dandy and amateur detective, travels with his former pickpocket valet, Dipper, to Italy where a young English tenor is groomed for operatic stardom. The glamour of Lake Como is shattered when violence strikes: one man dies and another disappears. Kestrel finds himself amid a web of suspects—a runaway wife with a male soprano lover, a liberal nobleman opposed to Austrian rule, a mocking Frenchman with perfect pitch, and a clever woman who haunts his dreams. Caught between the secretive Carbonari rebels and the ruthless Austrian police, Kestrel investigates the enigmatic tenor known only as "Orfeo," exploring whether he is a political agent, an adventurer, or a jealous lover. As the killer’s next strike unfolds, Kestrel’s quest for truth places him directly in danger.
