Books like Monsoon summer by Julia Gregson

Kit Smallwood, a spirited midwife exhausted by nursing soldiers in World War II, leaves war‑scarred England for Wickam Farm, where she joins a charity sending midwives to a maternity home in South India. There she meets Anto, a young Indian doctor trained at Oxford. Their forbidden romance blooms, contradicting the expectations of Kit’s Anglo‑Indian mother and Anto’s traditional family, who desire a conventional Indian bride. The couple secretly marries and travels to independent India, where Kit hopes to manage the hospital she supported from afar. In a country grappling with post‑colonial unrest, riots, and suspicion of the English, their marriage faces relentless pressure. The story follows how the couple confronts cultural barriers, familial expectations, and the volatile environment of a nation in transition, while Kit navigates the emotional cost of her dreams becoming harsh reality.
