Books like When She Was White by Judith Stone

When Sandra Laing was born in 1955 to a white couple, she was officially registered as white. Once she entered a white school, her dark skin and frizzy hair made her a target of harassment. The Laings attributed her appearance to a distant interracial relationship, yet neighbors accused her mother of adultery with a black man. Sandras life took a sharp turn when, at ten years old, she was officially reclassified as coloured. As a teenager she left home and eloped with a black man, provoking her parentsโ€™ disownment. With a privileged upbringing among whites, she faced a sudden reckoning in an all-black township, where she encountered the harsh realities of apartheidโ€™s legal system and social oppression.

The children of Sánchez by 6919127|Oscar Lewis book cover

๐Ÿ“˜ The children of Sánchez

Anthropologist's tape-recorded documentary in which each of five members of a slum-dwelling Mexico City family tells about their lives. Once or twice in every generation a scientific work appears which has the immediacy and force of great literature. The Children of Sanchez is such a book. It brings us in touch with the lives of its subjects in such a way that the reader is drawn into their world as if he were reading a great novel. This is an intimate account of an actual family from the slums of Mexico City. The story they tell is in their own words. The reader learns not only what it is like to grow up in a one-room home in a slum tenement in the heart of a great modern city, but, insofar as the lives in this book may be generalized, about the culture of poverty throughout the world--the culture shared by 80% of the world's people. The lives of the Sanchez family reveal a world of violence and death, of suffering and brutality, of broken homes and the cruelty of the poor to the poor. But they reveal, too, an intensity of feeling and human warmth, a sense of individuality, a capacity for joy, a hope for a better life, a desire for sympathy and love, a readiness to share the little they possess, and the courage to carry on in the face of great adversity.--From publisher description.

Secrets of Mariko by 10939020|Elisabeth Bumiller book cover

๐Ÿ“˜ Secrets of Mariko

The Secrets of Mariko is a remarkably revealing and intimate look at the life of an ordinary Japanese woman at the close of the twentieth century. Mariko and her husband, three children, and aged parents live in a small house in Tokyo. It is a family typical of hundreds of thousands of others in Japan. Mariko is a part-time meter reader and a very full-time wife, mother, and daughter. She spends her days cooking, keeping house, taking care of the children and her parents, working at her job, and stealing an afternoon now and then for herself. Through Mariko we gain a rare insight into the culture of Japan and begin to understand the obligations and desires that drive Japanese society. . Like many Japanese, Mariko knew very few Westerners, and was instinctively reserved with anyone outside the family circle. But somehow she broke through her sense of privacy and let Elisabeth Bumiller, a reporter for The Washington Post, into her life for more than a year. Over time, as they grew to know each other, Mariko gradually revealed her secrets. Most are small but deeply personal, and together they yield a nuanced portrait of a life. The Secrets of Mariko speaks eloquently of what it means to be Japanese, and to be an ordinary woman confronting the choices we all must face.
