After Captain James T. Kirk disappears into the Nexus, Spock—now commanding the science vessel Intrepid II—faces the sorrow of losing a close friend. While mourning, he receives a plea from former ally David Rabin, a young Starfleet officer tasked with protecting a harsh desert planet that shares Vulcan’s environment. The story revisits Spock’s youthful past when he, as a teenager, joined Rabin to stop an attempted coup on Vulcan that threatened to abandon the planet’s logical tradition. Years later, Rabin’s mission is sabotaged, and—under the looming threat of Romulan treachery—Spock must decide whether to return to the family customs he once fled. Through interplanetary voyages and encounters aboard starships, Spock confronts his greatest challenge and a pivotal choice that will shape his future within the Federation and the ancient culture that forged him.
