Books like Closing time by Joseph Heller

In *Closing Time*, Joseph Heller brings back familiar figures from his classic *Catch‑22*—Yossarian, Milo Minderbinder, the chaplain, and new characters like Sammy Singer and Lew—in the context of a world far beyond World War II. The novel follows these middle‑aged veterans as they confront the passage of time, the fading of wartime camaraderie, and the shift of American society from wartime unity to peacetime critique. Heller, known for his dark comedic style and incisive social commentary, applies the same ferocious humor to the contemporary era. He satirizes the absurdities of late 20th‑century politics, the decline of urban life, and the greed and hypocrisy he perceives within business and culture. While grounded in earlier characters, the book stands as an independent work that examines the broader generational experience of those who served in World War II and the changes that have reshaped their lives. *Closing Time* combines psychological depth with satirical wit, offering readers a reflective yet uproariously funny look at the end of a generation and the shifting moral landscape of America.
