Books like Illegal by José Ángel N.

After a first risky crossing from Mexico into the United States, the author is caught and released near the border, but he fights back, slipping into San Diego and deciding to stay forever. Arriving in the 1990s with only a 9th‑grade education, he moves to Chicago where ESL and GED classes open doors to higher education. He earns a college degree and a graduate degree, ultimately becoming a professional translator. Even with a well‑paying job, the lack of legal documentation isolates him: travel restrictions prevent career advancement, and everyday actions—such as buying a beer for his girlfriend at a Cubs game—trigger embarrassment when he cannot produce an ID. While living in a high‑rise condo, he is unable to fully realize the American dream. Through these struggles, he finds solace in education, which he believes triumphs over adversity. The memoir challenges stereotypes about undocumented immigrants and offers an honest account of life “amid the shadows.”
