Books like The Duchess of Malfi by John Webster

"The Duchess of Malfi" was first printed in 1623, though it was likely written as early as 1611. The play is rooted in a tale from Painter's *Palace of Pleasure*, itself a translation of the Italian novelist Bandello, and may reflect historical events of the period. John Webster, an enigmatic figure of early seventeenth‑century England, is known for four solo works—*The White Devil*, *The Duchess of Malfi*, *The Devil's Law-Case*, and *Appius and Virginia*. His tragedies come after the great blood‑and‑revenge cycle of works such as *The Spanish Tragedy* and Shakespeare’s *Hamlet*, yet before the decline of that era’s theatrical renaissance. Webster’s playwrighting is marked by vivid horror and intense emotional scenes, employing powerful dialogue to illuminate the depths of human feelings at moments of crisis. Though some scenes may challenge modern sensibilities, his skillful craft ranks his plays among England’s best dramatic writings of the time.
