Books like Rabbit, Run by John Updike

Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, a former high‑school basketball star, leaves his wife and son in a sudden, impulsive escape that marks the beginning of a restless journey. At twenty‑six, he oscillates between the pull of instinct, the weight of family responsibility, and deeper questions of self‑identity. The narrative follows his erratic, wandering path as he confronts the realities of middle‑class life in Pennsylvania, the complexities of adultery, and the shifting boundaries between personal desire and societal expectations. Rabbit’s story unfolds as a psychological exploration of a man caught between a sense of agency and the pull of fate, set against the backdrop of contemporary American domestic fiction. Throughout his flight, he maintains a conviction that his erratic steps are leading him toward a personal salvation—a theme that resonates with the broader human struggle between human weakness and the search for grace. Set in a modern Pennsylvania suburb, the novel roots itself in the everyday realities of middle‑class men, delving into themes of grief, identity, and the delicate balance between self and community.
