Books like Fire on the Mountain by John N. Maclean

John N. Maclean’s book recounts the events surrounding the storm‑king mountain fire, which began on July 3, 1994, in Colorado’s Garfield County. An initial mislabeling of the fire’s location by the Bureau of Land Management set the stage for several small mistakes that, after a few days, culminated in a disaster that claimed the lives of fourteen firefighters, four of whom were women. Through detailed research and testimony, Maclean explains why the fire, visible from Interstate 70, was not extinguished promptly, how one firefighter returned to a burning area after reaching safety, and why bodies were not recovered for almost two days. The narrative compares the incident to the Mann Gulch fire of 1949, underscoring the vulnerability of even seasoned professionals. The book provides a careful reconstruction of the tragedy, highlighting the consequences of administrative errors, firefighting protocols, and the unpredictable nature of wildfires in Colorado’s mountainous terrain.
