The moon Cresta’s destruction leaves a quarter‑of‑a‑million dead and the League’s civil war spiralling out of control. In the aftermath, Sandy Kresnov discovers alien Talee operative Cai in Tanusha, tasked with measuring the depth of society’s technological instability. Sandy’s old nemesis, Renaldo Takewashi—the self‑styled father of synthetic intelligence—seeks refuge at the Federation. He claims to hold a cure in a human child, Kiril, who bears previously unknown Talee technology. The Talee, fearing the misuse of this technology, threaten to eliminate anyone who employs it. Now all that lies between Sandy and the fate of her family is the possibility of triggering another war among humans or against the powerful Talee, while protecting a secret that could either free synthetic beings or doom humanity.
