Books like Perdita by Joan Smith

Governess Moira Greenwood dutifully looks after the spirited Perdita Brodie, a spirited young woman who resists her stepmother’s attempts to control her life. Together they secure positions in a modest traveling theatre company, each bringing their own talents—Moira as a clever cook and Perdita as a spirited performer. Their presence soon draws the attention of the sharp‑spoken Lord Stornaway, who assumes they are merely "lightskirts". Though Moira insists they are respectable, the lord dismisses her explanation and remains convinced of their illicit nature. Despite his disdain, something about the lord’s presence intrigues Moira. The story weaves romance, humor, and a touch of social commentary as the trio navigates the challenges of theatre life, societal expectations, and the complexities of newfound relationships.
