Books like Out on a limb by Joan Hess

Out on a Limb follows Claire Malloy, the owner of Faberville Bookstore in Farberville, as she grapples with personal uncertainty and a town’s clash of progress versus preservation. The elderly Miss Emily Parchester refuses to let the oak tree be bulldozed for a new condominium and finds herself chained to the tree, armed and ready for a dramatic stand. When developer Anthony Armstrong is murdered, Claire’s life is turned upside down: a baby is left at her doorstep, the teenage mother the immediate suspect, and the elderly teacher’s willingness to risk death puts her in danger. Claire must navigate the community’s secrets and her own doubts to identify the real killer. With themes of conservation, real‑estate development, and the role of women detectives, the novel explores the tension between history and progress, all while delivering a gripping mystery set in a small Arkansas town.
