Books like The last thing he wanted by Joan Didion
Elena McMahon, a Washington Post reporter covering the 1984 presidential primary, finds herself estranged from her influential husband in California. Seeking answers, she journeys to Florida to meet her father, Dick McMahon, who is involved in clandestine arms deals.
Through Elena's narrative, the story shifts from her well‑charted life among affluent political fundraisers to a chaotic investigation of historical randomness. It interlaces FBI interviews, statements from Senator Mark Berquist, and the late Ambassador‑at‑Large Treat Morrisson to unravel the tangled web of covert action, assassination plots, and illicit arms trading.
The book traces connections from the assassination of John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, to the Iran‑Contra affair, touching on Cuban leader Fidel Castro and Cuba’s role in covert operations, ultimately revealing a deep‑seated subtext of menace and irony that surfaces in the final pages.
