Books like The ghost by Jefferson Morley

James Jesus Angleton served as the CIA’s chief of counterintelligence during the mid-20th century, a position that placed him beyond the public and congressional view. He oversaw MKULTRA mind‑control experiments, mass mail‑infiltration of civilians, and extensive surveillance of anti‑war and black nationalist movements. Angleton’s tenure was marked by controversial involvement in the JFK assassination investigation, support for Israel’s nuclear program, and an obsessive hunt for Soviet moles that strained Agency resources. Despite his opaque operations, he remained a formidable adversary to U.S. enemies and left a lasting mythic stature within the intelligence community. Investigative reporter Jefferson Morley chronicles Angleton’s dramatic rise and influence, detailing his relationships—from Ezra Pound to Washington’s underground gay milieu—and the broader political implications of his actions during the Cold War.
