Books like Los enamoramientos by Javier Marías

Maria Dolz takes her daily breakfast at the same sandwich café, where she idly watches a handsome couple following a predictable routine. One day the pair are no longer there, and she feels a vague, unsettling loss. Later, while scrolling through a newspaper, Maria comes across a stark photograph: a man, affiliated with the couple, lies wounded and stabbed on a street. The image forces her to confront the hidden reality behind the picturesque tableau. The story unfolds through Maria’s growing curiosity and unease, as the investigative thread of the murdered man begins to unravel a web of personal relationships and concealed motives. Set against the backdrop of everyday Madrid life, the novel weaves themes of remarriage, infatuation, and the curious threshold where ordinary observation collides with darker human intentions.
