Books like Life is but a dream by James, Brian

Sabrina, a 15‑year‑old student, is admitted to the Wellness Center for treatment of schizophrenia. During her stay she encounters Alec, another patient who challenges her perception of reality. He encourages her to view her condition as a part of the world’s larger madness, urging her to resist rigid medical conventions and preserve the creativity and uniqueness that define her identity. The novel explores the emotional and psychological tension between institutional care and individual expression, as Sabrina navigates her mental health while contemplating whether the system she is a part of truly understands her. Through the relationship between Sabrina and Alec, the story examines how psychiatric hospitals influence the lives of young patients and how their creative talents can become both a source of therapy and a catalyst for resistance. Set in an indeterminate present-day environment, the narrative offers a nuanced look at schizophrenia, mental illness, and the struggle for personal agency within clinical settings.
