Books like The annotated Brothers Grimm by Jacob Grimm

Drawing from the authoritative 1857 edition of the Brothers Grimm, this volume presents more than forty carefully selected fairy tales in new translations by esteemed folklorist Miriam Tatar. Readers—parents, children, and students—will rediscover familiar favorites such as "Little Red Riding Hood," "Cinderella," "Snow White," and "Rapunzel," while also uncovering lesser‑known yet equally captivating stories like "The Star Talers," "Mother Holle," and "The Seven Ravens." Tatar’s extensive annotations—hundreds in total—provide readers with insights into each tale’s historical origins, cultural complexities, and psychological effects. The book complements the text with over 150 evocative illustrations, many in color, drawn by celebrated artists including George Cruikshank, Walter Crane, Kay Nielsen, and Arthur Rackham. In addition to a thoughtful introduction by A. S. Byatt and the original prefaces from the Grimms’ editions, the collection offers a series of essays by Tatar that trace the lives of the Brothers Grimm and examine the broader historical and cultural impact of their work. Together, these components illuminate the enduring magic of the Grimm canon and the powerful mysteries woven into each story.
