Books like Morte d'Urban by J. F. Powers

Father Urban, a well‑known Catholic priest, has earned a national reputation as a persuasive speaker on the religious circuit, bringing an expansive vision of spiritual life to audiences across the country. His warm personality and tolerance for moral ambiguity make him a popular figure among lay Catholics. When the provincial head of his dowdy order sends him to a retreat house in the Minnesota hinterlands, Urban faces a daunting new challenge. Despite the isolation of the Minnesota countryside, he perseveres, sharing God’s word with enthusiasm at local golf courses, fishing lodges, and backyard barbecues. Yet the difficulties he encounters mount, and his greatest success ultimately becomes a setback he cannot recover from. This novel, a National Book Award finalist in 1963, offers a nuanced portrait of a clergyman whose public charisma clashes with institutional expectations, revealing the delicate balance between personal conviction and ecclesiastical authority.
