Books like 소년이 온다 by Han Kang

Set amid the violent student uprising that shook South Korea in 1980, the story centers on Dong‑ho, a young boy whose sudden death becomes a pivot for a city in crisis. Through a series of interconnected chapters, the novel follows the experiences of those closest to him—a best friend who shares his fate, an editor who battles censorship, a prisoner, a factory worker, and Dong‑ho’s anguished mother. Each character bears the weight of collective memory and suppression, yet their stories intertwine to reveal a people striving for a voice amid brutality. The narrative stays anchored to historical reality, portraying the harsh conditions of political oppression while highlighting the resilience and humanity that endure through trauma. By tracking the enduring echoes of the massacre, the work presents a portrait of Korean society’s path toward democratization and the quest for remembrance.
